University of Maryland Medical System Has Strengthened Ties with Minorities, Says COO Herbert Buchanan

The University of Maryland Medical Center and University of Maryland Medical System were recently honored between Feb. 18 and 19 at the 11th Minority Business Summit powered by Visionary Marketing Group, Inc. (VMG).

The event was staged at the Baltimore Hilton Hotel featuring workshops, awards receptions and a panel session featuring some of the industry leaders.

Herbert C. Buchanan, senior vice president and chief operating officer for the University of Maryland Medical Center, was honored with the Diversity Trailblazer Award at the Connecting the Dots Power Reception on Feb. 18.

Mr. Buchanan told Ib’s Blog in an exclusive interview that the award is a reflection of the work his organization has done to develop closer ties with the minority business community.

“The award and the recognition by VMG represents an acknowledgement of the effort [University of Maryland Medical System] UMMS and [University  of Maryland Medical Center] UMMC  has made to develop closer and more productive relationships with the minority business community and to take meaningful steps toward significantly increasing the amount of business we do with that community,” Buchanan said.

“The organization’s award reinforces the importance and benefits of our business diversity strategies, and the individual award received by our UMMS executive, Donna Jacobs, affirms the talented, committed, and community oriented leader we have carrying the flag at UMMS.”

Ms. Donna Jacobs, senior vice president, Government and Regulatory Affairs, UMMS, was presented with the Women of Influence Award in the category of Advocacy.  

An experienced administrator and attorney, Ms. Jacobs was honored at the Women of Influence Breakfast on Feb. 19.

“Our presence at the event demonstrates our commitment to continuing to improve our efforts, and the networking opportunities these events provide help us to develop new and lasting relationships,” Buchanan said.

“We are proud to be a part of a gathering of so many organizations who are doing wonderful things in minority business, grateful to be recognized along with so many other worthy organizations and individuals, and happy to be able to spend time with old and new friends and associates.”
