NMC Consulting Group, Inc., is elevating entrepreneurship to another level, having implemented a couple of initiatives to help entrepreneurs (and aspiring business owners) with strategies on how they can further grow their business. Founded by Natalie M. Cofield, who serves as president, the company has grown since its inception with emphasis on Business Development, Program Management, and Public Affairs.
With offices in Washington, D.C., and New York, NMC Consulting Group is a boutique consulting firm that works to effectively support its clients by developing and enhancing economic development, entrepreneurship, and community‐related programming.
The company has lined-up a couple of new initiatives for 2010 in a move to equip entrepreneurs with some of the best practices that can help them excel.
In partnership with the D.C. Commission for Women and the D.C. Office of Women’s Policy & Initiatives, NMC Consulting Group will on January 27 kick off its newly established initiative – Walker’s Legacy: A Women in Business Lecture Series.
Ms. Cofield said she is delighted at the number of people who have already registered for the lecture series, which promises to be a great event with the appearance in waiting of some nationally renowned business professionals who will be giving keynotes as well.
“We are very excited about the level of interest that we have received for this inaugural program and we look forward to continuing this series going into the future,” Cofield told Ib’s Blog in an exclusive interview. “I’m just really elated about the future of entrepreneurship.”
The Walker’s Legacy, which has generated interest from as far as Denver, Colorado and Cleveland, Ohio, is named in honor of Madam C. J. Walker, an African American entrepreneur and philanthropist who the Guinness Book of Records cites as the first female self-made millionaire in U.S. history.
“I’m just happy that the program is becoming visible; it’s out there, and the level of feedback for this initiative in its first year is amazing,” Cofield said.
Geared primarily toward mid-level professional women and business executives, the Walker’s Legacy initiative has four main goals: Encourage Entrepreneurship & Economic Advancement Amongst Women; Create Business and Professional Learning Experiences for Women; Facilitate Networking and Collaboration Amongst Women; and, Showcase the Achievements of Notable Women.
Successful businesswomen who will present at the lecture series include A’Lelia Bundles (author and Emmy-award winning television producer, also former ABC News Executive), Carla Harris (Investment banker and Gospel singer who has been named by Fortune magazine among “The 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in Corporate America”), and Carla Nelson (Director, Mayor’s Office of Minority & Women-Owned Business Development, City of Baltimore).
Starting in June 2010, NMC Consulting Group will launch another program—PROSPECTUS—a nine-course entrepreneurship and business development program.
The program is aimed at providing aspiring entrepreneurs and established business owners with strategies on how to grow and sustain successful business enterprises in a competitive environment.
“We are very pleased to be launching ProspectusTM, a nine-week entrepreneurship program to assist aspiring and existing business owners,” Cofield said, adding that there will be nine different professors who will be speaking to participants.
She said Prospectus will be offered twice a year, with cohorts beginning each October and March.
“Our organization is so committed to the mission of this program that we are putting forward $1,500 worth of cash prize for the winner of the competition,” Cofield said.
Participants stand a chance to win this prize by presenting their business plans and ideas to an audience of potential investors.
Multi-millionaire and Wall St. Journal bestselling author, Ephren Taylor, will provide the keynote at the conclusion of this first series of ProspectusTM.
Ms. Cofield, who was in 2008 appointed by Washington D.C.’s Mayor Adrian M. Fenty as the youngest Commissioner for the D.C. Commission for Women, where she serves as Chair of the Public Affairs Committee and Co-Chair of the International Affairs Committee, relishes her passion for public speaking.
“I love it; I really do,” said Cofield, who formerly served as Director of Industry & Business Development for the Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership.
“I love to do public speaking because it gives me an opportunity to connect personally with people,” Cofield said, adding that she has already been scheduled to speak at a couple of upcoming events, including at the 2010 Woman to Woman Conference at Howard University on February 3, 2010.
“It is especially rewarding when I have an opportunity to speak to young people,” Cofield said. Ms. Cofield will speak to more than 300 high school students when the conference commences at Howard University.
Also in February, Ms. Cofield will provide the keynote at the Booker T. Washington Senior High School where she will be speaking to the entire student body about entrepreneurship.
At 28, Ms. Cofield has a knack for taking on many things at once and doing them very well. Aside from being a radio personality, presenter and lecturer on business, economic and community development-related topics, she is also a researcher, writer and published author, and many of her articles have been published in industry journals.
“I write about entrepreneurship, and economic development,” Cofield said. “The goal is to educate and encourage people toward professions and business and/or entrepreneurship.”
Ms. Cofield served as co-author and lead editor of the Doing Business in DC Guide Book, which has more than 20,000 copies published in five different languages (Korean, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Spanish, and English).
In 2009, she published The Pursuit of Entrepreneurship a Guide For African American Entrepreneurs, which was commissioned by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation with more than 1,500 copies released at the 2009 Annual Legislative Conference.
Ms. Cofield has won numerous awards and in 2006 was listed in Ebony Magazine’s Top 30 Under 30.
